About Ryan's Role at Buildcalchub

Ryan Mitchell is the senior technical reviewer for the Buildcalchub Landscaping cluster. Every calculator, guide and project path that touches mulch, gravel, soil, sand, landscape fabric, or yard coverage is reviewed line-by-line by Ryan before Sarah Miller publishes it.

Ryan's review covers four areas that the editor cannot validate alone:

  • Mulch depth & coverage area — Does the recommendation match the use? 2–3" for flower beds, 3–4" around trees and shrubs (with a clear 3" ring at the trunk to avoid mulch volcanoes), 1–2" touch-up over existing mulch. A cubic yard of bulk mulch covers ~108 ft² at 3" depth — that math has to land cleanly in the calculator.
  • Topsoil volume & bulk yield — Does the topsoil volume account for ~15–20% settling after watering and foot traffic? Is the bulk-vs-bagged break-even (typically around 0.7 yd³) honest? Is the bulk density reasonable (1,400–1,800 lb/yd³ screened topsoil, depending on moisture)?
  • Landscape fabric & drainage gravel — Is the right fabric weight specified (3 oz woven for mulch beds, 4–5 oz non-woven for under-paver and drainage applications)? Are the overlap factors right (10–12" minimum)? For drainage gravel, is the sizing tied to the application (3/8" pea gravel for French drains, #57 stone for paver base, #2 stone for footing drains)?
  • Real bulk-yard economics — Bulk vs bagged break-even, delivery minimums, seasonal mulch pricing swings (April–May peak), bulk-yard load-and-deliver vs contractor markup — all need 2026 numbers from real yards, not generic averages.

Field Experience — What 12 Years Looks Like

Ryan's career in landscape installation began in 2014 as a crew lead for a Baltimore-area design-install firm. Over 12 years he has personally estimated, supervised, or technically reviewed:

  • 1,800+ residential mulch jobs — from 4–6 yd³ touch-ups to 35–45 yd³ full-property installs.
  • 600+ paver projects — patios, walkways and small driveways, base + bedding + joint sand takeoffs.
  • 420+ topsoil & grading jobs — new-lawn establishment, raised beds, grade corrections.
  • 180+ French drain & surface drainage installs — with drainage gravel and fabric specs cross-referenced to local soil percolation.
  • ~22,000 yards of bulk mulch and ~14,000 yards of bulk gravel / stone cumulatively estimated across 12 years.
  • 500+ bulk-yard tickets indexed and re-priced quarterly for 2026 cost calibration on Buildcalchub.

Credentials & Certifications

  • ICPI (Interlocking Concrete Pavement Institute) Certified Installer
  • NCMA Segmental Retaining Wall (SRW) Installer
  • Maryland Licensed Tree Expert (LTE) — coursework completed
  • ISA Certified Arborist — In Training
  • OSHA 10-Hour Construction — Current

Standards Ryan References on Every Review

  • ICPI Tech Spec series — Base depth requirements (4" pedestrian / 6" vehicular), bedding sand (1" ASTM C33), joint sand specifications.
  • NCMA SRW Best Practices — Gravel backfill and drainage tile sizing for segmental retaining walls.
  • ANSI A300 (Tree Care) — Mulching standards: depth, root-flare exposure, mulch-volcano avoidance.
  • USDA NRCS Plant Materials Technical Notes — Topsoil quality, organic matter, compaction guidance for plant establishment.
  • AASHTO M43 — Standard sizes of coarse aggregate (#2, #57, #8, pea gravel) — how to translate a French drain spec into the right bulk-yard order.
  • ASTM C33 — Concrete Aggregates — Bedding sand spec for paver base, joint sand gradation.
  • ASTM D5852 — Erosion control and silt-fence fabric specs (woven fabric weight, tear strength).

How Ryan Calibrates 2026 Landscape Pricing

Landscape material cost figures on Buildcalchub are reconciled quarterly by Ryan against active bulk-yard data:

  • 20+ fresh bulk-yard tickets per quarter — double-shredded hardwood mulch, dyed mulch, screened topsoil, pea gravel, #57 stone, #2 stone — pulled from real yards in Baltimore, Frederick, Annapolis and Wilmington.
  • Big-box bagged-product audits — quarterly pricing checks on 2 cu ft mulch bags, 0.75 cu ft soil bags at Home Depot, Lowe's and regional garden centers.
  • Delivery-fee survey — bulk-yard delivery minimums and per-mile rates across the regional supplier set.
  • Seasonal swing factors — April–May peak premiums and August trough discounts tracked across 3 yards to keep recommendations honest year-round.

Current Q2 2026 snapshot built into the calculator round-off: bulk hardwood mulch $32–$45/yd³ delivered; screened topsoil $28–$42/yd³ delivered; pea gravel $58–$78/yd³; #57 stone $44–$62/yd³; bagged mulch 2 cu ft $4.20–$5.80; bagged topsoil 0.75 cu ft $3.40–$4.60.

What Ryan Does Not Do

  • Ryan does not review asphalt, concrete, aggregate-base or measurement content on this site — those clusters are reviewed by other cluster specialists, and pages outside landscaping do not carry Ryan's byline.
  • Ryan does not provide individual landscape design, planting plans, or stamped grading drawings through Buildcalchub. For a real landscape design or sealed grading plan, retain a licensed landscape architect or designer in your jurisdiction.

Contact & Corrections

To report a calculation or field-assumption error on any landscaping page — wrong mulch depth assumption, off coverage area math, unrealistic topsoil volume, mismatched landscape fabric spec, or under-sized drainage gravel — send a note to contact@buildcalchub.net. Sarah triages the message; if it's a technical issue, Ryan re-opens the page for review and signs off on the corrected version with a fresh dateReviewed timestamp.
