Sod Calculator — Pallets, Slabs/Rolls, Square Yards and 2026 Delivered Cost

Estimate how many pallets, slabs or rolls of sod your lawn needs — with grass-type-specific pallet coverage (Fescue/KBG/Bermuda 450 ft² vs Zoysia 450 ft² in 504 plugs) and a waste allowance that scales with shape complexity (5–8% rectangular, 10–15% curved beds, 15–20% many borders).

Why this matters

Why ‘Just Measure It’ Under-Orders Sod by 8–20%

Sod looks like a simple area calculation — multiply length by width, order that many square feet. Sod farms reality is different: sod is sold by the pallet, not by the square foot, and you can’t buy a partial pallet. A 600 ft² lawn at 450 ft² per pallet is 1.33 pallets — so you order 2 pallets, which is 900 ft². You either have leftover ($75–$120 of unused sod) or you cut creatively and lose 5–15% to waste.

Three additional places sod estimates go wrong:

  • Pallet coverage varies by grass type. Cool-season Tall Fescue, KBG, and most warm-season Bermuda ship as 16×24 in slabs — about 168 pieces, 450 ft² per pallet. Zoysia ships as smaller 4×16 in plugs — 504 pieces, also ~450 ft² per pallet, but the cut count is 3× higher. Large rolls (24×60 in = 10 ft²) ship at 50 rolls / 500 ft² per pallet. Picking the wrong assumption leaves you a pallet short or long.
  • Waste % scales with shape. Rectangular yards 5–8%; curved planting beds 10–15%; many borders & obstacles (trees, beds, walks) 15–20%. A ‘5%’ default on a free-form yard with 6 garden beds will leave you 8 slabs short on installation day.
  • Delivered cost is per pallet, not per ft². The $145–$295/pallet 2026 delivered price already bakes in delivery within ~25 miles of the sod farm. Quoting per ft² misleads — you can’t order 30 ft², only whole pallets, and the per-ft² drops dramatically on the second pallet.

The calculator above asks for grass-type pallet specs (preset by cool-season slab / Bermuda slab / Zoysia plug) and outputs pallets + slabs + sq-yards + cost. It does the rounding to whole pallets so you don’t arrive 22 slabs short.

The formula

How to Calculate Sod Calculator

Areaft² = L × W
Areaadj = Areaft² × (1 + waste%)
Pallets =Areaadj ÷ (pieces/pallet × ft²/piece)⌉

Always round pallets UP — sod farms ship whole pallets only. The calculator above does this for you with the ⌈ceiling⌉ operator.

Waste Allowance by Lawn Shape

  • Rectangular / square yard, no obstacles — 5–8% waste. Slabs lay edge-to-edge with minimal cutting.
  • Yard with 1–2 trees and a few beds — 8–12% waste. Cuts around obstacles.
  • Curved beds, sweeping borders — 10–15% waste. Lots of triangular cuts.
  • Many borders / driveways / walks bisecting the lawn — 15–20% waste. Multiple linear cuts.

The calculator above defaults to 8% — bump it before you order if your yard isn’t a simple rectangle.

Sod vs Seed Cost & Timeline Trade-Off

For a 1,000 ft² lawn in 2026: sod is $440–$650 delivered (2–3 pallets), installs in a day, full-traffic in 2–3 weeks. Seed is $22–$54 (4–6 lb Tall Fescue), takes a weekend to seed, and is full-traffic in 8–12 weeks. The 10–20× cost spread buys you 6–10 weeks of usable lawn. For more on the seed side, see the Grass Seed Calculator.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much sod do I need for my lawn?

Measure length × width, add 5–20% for waste (5–8% rectangular; 10–15% curved beds; 15–20% many obstacles), then divide by 450 ft² per pallet and round up. A 1,000 ft² lawn with 10% waste = 1,100 ft² ÷ 450 = 3 pallets.

How many square feet are in a pallet of sod?

About 450 ft² for almost all sod types: cool-season fescue / KBG / PRG (168 slabs at 2.67 ft²); warm-season Bermuda (same); Zoysia plugs (504 small plugs); large rolls (45–50 rolls at 10 ft²). St Augustine sometimes ships at 400 ft²/pallet in Florida — confirm with the supplier.

How much does a pallet of sod cost in 2026?

Delivered 2026 Mid-Atlantic baseline: Tall Fescue $195, KBG $215, Bermuda $175, Zoysia $245. Add $35–$60 short-load fee on single-pallet orders. Beyond 30 miles from the sod farm, add $4–$8/mile haul.

How many slabs of sod are in a pallet?

Standard 16×24 in slab: 168 slabs per pallet (covers ~450 ft²). Zoysia 4×16 in plug: 504 plugs per pallet (covers ~450 ft²). Large 24×60 in roll: 45–50 rolls per pallet (covers ~450–500 ft²).

How long does it take to install a pallet of sod?

Solo DIYer on prepped soil: 2–3 hours per pallet (168 slabs). With a helper: 1–1.5 hours per pallet. Pro 2-person crews install 6–8 pallets per day. Add 1 day for site prep (till + amend + grade) before sod day.

When should I install sod?

Cool-season grasses (Fescue, KBG): best in early fall (Sep–Oct) or early spring (Mar–Apr) — soil temp 55–65°F. Avoid July–August heat. Warm-season (Bermuda, Zoysia): best late spring through early summer (May–Jun) — soil temp 70–80°F. Avoid October–March dormancy.

How much water does new sod need?

First 2 weeks: keep soil constantly moist — water 2–3 times per day, 5–10 minutes each. Weeks 3–4: taper to once per day, 15–20 min. After 4 weeks (rooted): water 1 in per week (about 60 min of typical sprinkler), preferably as 1 deep weekly soak.
